CALLIGRANE

Let paper surprise you

CALLIGRANE

Although Calligrane specializes in paper products, its merchandise is a far cry from your typical Parisian postcards.

The boutique, hidden away on a side street in the Marais, is a true emporium of two-dimensional goods. Founded in Cannes in 1979, Calligrane highlights the ways in which form and functionality intersect. The papeterie carries hand-crafted everyday products – stationary sets, notebooks, wallets, iPod cases – while also showcasing rare, paper-based works by international fiber artists. Beyond printing, the shop’s repertoire includes book-binding, gilding, and made-to-specification services.

Racks upon racks of exquisite, designer paper line the walls of Calligrane, while carefully-laid shelves and tables display journals and high-end stationary products. Spread across the storefront windows are samples from the shop’s “Fruits et Légumes Sechés” series: papers made entirely from dehydrated fruit and vegetable slices, in which the outlines of lemons or star fruits are still visible. Other quirky featured items include paper made from tea bags, baskets fashioned from paper, and illuminated paper sculptures. Calligrane seems to occupy an interesting middle ground between boutique and art gallery, making for a delightful and stimulating shopping experience.
